Migration Timing
The best time to migrate is when your current device still works perfectly — not after the screen cracks or the battery swells. We recommend a documented migration every five to seven years, or sooner if the manufacturer announces end-of-life.
What Your Archive Needs
A migration record should include:
- Date of migration and reason
- Old device model and firmware version
- Verification that the new device displays the same receive addresses
- Updated recovery documentation referencing the new hardware
A Common Mistake
Holders buy a new device, initialise it with a fresh seed, and transfer funds — leaving the old seed phrase as a dangling recovery path that no longer controls any bitcoin. Your archive documentation must reflect which seed is authoritative after every migration.
